New music by Raymond Schroyens

We have recently published some new works by celebrated Belgian choral composer Raymond Schroyens. So we would like to present these new publications in this newsletter. You can find a complete overview of his published works on his composer's page.

Luytt Music publications

Last year we took over the Luytt Music catalogue. This contained many works by Raymond Schroyens, that are now available with us. Most of these compositions have been written for choir, but the catalogue also contained two instrumental works: Battery for Bells (for carillon) and 3 Birthday Presents (for piano). This last work was written for the composer's son's birthdays. The first one was dedicated to Mr. Luc Rombouts, city carillonneur of Tienen and University carillonneur of Leuven.

In the choir publications, Arthropodoi immediately drew our attention. The version for equal voices was the compulsary work for category E (Pennant category equal voice youth choirs) at the European Music Festival for Youth Neerpelt 2008. We also find the witty Le Manoir de Thélèmes (SATB) and Les Muses Gaillardes, a seven-part suite on French erotic poetry. Each of these are magnificent works; we are glad they have gotten a place in our catalogue.

2020/080 – Three Birthday Presents (piano)

2020/022 – Les Muses Gaillardes (SATB)

Herfstmijmering – Inner voices

Now that the hot summer temperatures have passed, autumn is definitely here. The ideal moment to talk about the beautiful Herfstmijmering by poet Jozef Baert. Raymond Schroyens wrote an equally beautiful choral piece on this text for equal voices in 1981. It was originally published in ANZ choir page 69, but is now available again, with us.

Inner voices was written after the farewell ceremony of the composer's sister-in-law. The text, that contains an comforting message, made an impression on the composer and the music followed soon. Later, the composer made a Dutch translation that kept the spirit and prosody of the original English text.

2019/027 – Herfstmijmering (SSAA)
2019/038 – Inner voices (SATB)

De nacht noemt vele namen

The night called many names
and wakes the spirit of those who carried them
now one of them in airy sounds...

Thus begins the foreword of De nacht noemt vele namen, a breathtaking composition for piano solo, with which de pianist steps inside a sleep world, where the silence rules. The piece is a rendering of emotions and sensations that range from quasi-lethargic contemplations to heightened astral excitement. The composer only annotated very summary dynamic and tempo indications, but expects the pianist to fill these in himself, like the affects of the baroque music. This piece was recently featured on the Belgian national classical radio and always touches the listeners.
